IRS: Tax Return Transcript

Federal Income Taxes previous calendar year

"Get Your Tax Record" IRS Portal to download your IRS Tax Return Transcript

There are several options regarding the type of transcript you can order; the Tax Return Transcript is the document that we prefer for residency purposes. We need tax information for the calendar year prior to the residency application.

Parent documents

We require tax documents for parents of any student who is less than 26 years years old to document whether the student was claimed or not claimed during the calendar year prior to the residency application. Parents may submit a Federal Tax Return Transcript, OR a signed Federal 1040 form, OR a notarized letter stating an intent to claim or not claim the student on taxes for the year.

Information we need

  • Dependents.
  • Parent address.
  • If a copy of the 1040 is submitted instead of the tax return transcript, we need to see the signature page and the document must be signed.

We do NOT need

  • Income (black it out, if desired).
  • Identifying numbers except the last 4 digits of the student's SSN.
  • If a copy of the 1040 is submitted instead of the tax return transcript, we just need the first and signature pages.

Student documents

Student tax documents are only required for students applying as financially independent who are not yet 26 years old. We must see the student name, address, the last 4 of the SSN, and income. If a Tax Return Transcript is not submitted, a signed copy of the first and signature pages of the Federal 1040 is required.

If income is earned in a state other than Washington, non- or part-time-resident state tax documents are required for that state.
